Challenge #2 - The Happ Bedroom

The Happs are moving into their new home, and would like to
start fresh with a brand-new bedroom.  They've put in a nice
blue carpet and painted the walls a lovely shade of blue, but
that's as far as they've gotten, so they've asked
SimOutlets' Design Showdown for help.
The would like the room to be mainly blue, or blue and white,
and they have asked for a room in which they can relax,
including seating for reading a book and putting on shoes.
They've also requested the designers use their white lace curtains
in the room, as they are heirlooms that they'd like to put to use.

The Proposals:

First up is a room designed by Hayley Martin.
"This is fantastic," Hayley exclaimed. "The idea is to work
around the blue!  Finally!  I'm so excited!"

Hayley decided to divide the room into two distinct areas,
the sleeping area, and the relaxing area.  "I think this makes
the room seem larger," says Hayley, "and it makes the sitting
area seem even more like a private little retreat."

Hayley selected a denim-blue comforter for the bed, with
matching lamps.  She also used a denim recliner and loveseat
in the sitting area.  "I chose the more rustic-looking bed to
contrast with the frilly lace curtains and I think the denim is
a good choice to bring it all together," says Hayley.  "I selected
a colorful rug and used their old end table as a stand in the
sitting area, so they can display pictures and store things there.
I think it's a comfortable room, and I think it fits their description."

The second proposal is a dressier room by designer Vera Voss.
She's chosen to use a midnight blue with white, accented with silver
and gold.  "I like to use silver and gold together, especially when
working with white," Vera explained, "because I think it makes a
room seem more luxurious."

The dark blue was chosen so that no one piece would
take over the room.  Vera wanted each piece to capture
the eye only for a moment, so that your eyes would move
around the room quickly, taking everything in.

"I used those end tables with the silver and the light wood because I
like the way it looks with the white and the midnight blue," says Vera.
"I think it tones down the fanciness of the room, so it feels more
comfortable. And I didn't want to divide the room up into sections,
so I set it up so that there's a lot of open area, but there are still
distinct areas to the room.  I think they're going to like it."

The third design is a modern country look from Rebecca Hill.
"There are aspects of the room that are country, and there are
modern pieces as well, but I think the two work wonderfully
well together here."

Rebecca selected a double-twin bed and made duvet covers
and pillows from a fun ocean blue fabric she discovered on sale.
"I based the room around the fabric," she says, "because when I
found it, I knew it would be perfect for this room. So then I had
to go out and find everything else to go with it."

Rebecca found the perfect chairs, just the style and color she was
looking for, and then added the plaid lamps and the coordinating
rug.  "They wanted seating, and I think this is the kind of look
they're interested in.  You can come in here and sit and flip
through a magazine or write a letter to a friend, and the
room just has a calming effect, so you really feel relaxed."

Which design did the Happs like best?
Who won the Design Showdown?

...Hayley Martin won with her denim inspired, divided room.

"I was so excited when I saw this room," said Mandy.
"It was exactly what I'd envisioned."
"Well, it wasn't what I'd pictured, exactly," said Own,
"but it is definitely what we were hoping for."
"I love that the sitting area is separate from the other side of
the room," Mandy said.
"Yes," agreed Owen, "it really makes it seem like you have
this little area of the house just to relax - read a book, listen to
some music, take a nap, or do whatever.  That's great."
"Vera's and Rebecca's rooms were breathtaking," said Mandy.
"I never thought that room could look that good, but they were
stunning.  With a little rearranging, either of those would have
made me very happy.  But I don't think they were Owen's taste."
"No," said Owen, "they were much more Mandy's style than mine.
Hayley's room is more my speed, it feels like your room, not like
you're stepping into someone else's house."
"Hayley did a fantastic job," gushed Mandy.  "We're so happy with it."

Hayley Martin, the winning designer, said,  "I was so stoked when I found
out the theme for this room was blue.  Talk about a match made in heaven.
And when I met them, Mandy and Owen, and they told me what they were
looking for, I knew right away how to do it.  I just saw it immediately.
I'm glad I got it right."
